Understanding Dry Eye Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Do you suffer from Dry Eyes? If so, you are certainly not alone and it could be a symptom of an underlying condition.

‘Dry Eye Syndrome’ can have many different underlying causes and in many cases there is no single identifiable cause, but here are a few of the more common contributing factors:

  • The environment, especially dry heat or high winds
  • Disease
  • Side effects of certain medicines
  • Hormonal changes
  • Ageing

You probably only notice your tears when you laugh or cry, but the surface of your eye is always covered by a thin layer of liquid known as the tear film. Tears have several important functions, such as lubricating the eyes, keeping them clean and free of dust, protecting your eyes against infection and aiding sight by helping to stabilise your vision.

Any of the above reasons can reduce the amount of tears your eyes produce and cause the irritable dry eyes we’ve talked of.

There are often very simple and straightforward treatments, including the prescription of specialist medicines and eye drops, changing current medications or addressing dietary and lifestyle habits.
